This October we celebrated our first birthday as a WI. With a little bit of bubbly and token gift for all, we reminisced on the year past and all the fabulous and entertaining events we have had.
As well as the festivities we had the serious matter of voting in our new committee for the next year. Nominations were given, a vote was held and a new president voted in. Congratulations to Sophie Moore, we look forward to having you as our new President. Following the vote, Sophie hosted a Christmas paper folding craft evening where we learnt to make some beautiful 3D snowflake decorations. Septembers meeting gave our ladies an introduction to bee keeping with local keeper and honey business owner, Peter Sounderland.
Peter and his wife gave us a very informative evening jam packed with natures facts about the seasons, bee colonies and honey making. Armed with honeycomb straight from the hive we all got the chance to taste fresh honey straight from the bees. Peter also brought his microscope and a few slides for us to see pollen cells from various plants and different parts of a bee - including a tongue! A fascinating and factual evening. Thank you Norfolk Honey! WI Life magazine is looking for members to take part in some upcoming features as follows. If you think you or one of your fellow members might fit the bill, please get in touch.
Overcoming adversity Have you faced a major life-changing event and come out the other side stronger? Perhaps you overcame a serious illness and went on to help others; maybe caring for a sick partner or child meant having to build your life and business again from scratch or you turned your life around after a tragedy against all odds. We’re looking for WI members from all walks of life who not only overcame adversity, but went on to make life all the better for it. Please send a few details of your story (no need to write an article, we’ll handle that this end), along with a photograph of yourself, to [email protected] or write to Liz Frost at: 104 New Kings Road, London, SW6 4LP. Inspiring women for 2015! Have you got a really interesting job or pastime or do you live your life in a really unusual way? We’d love to hear from members who stand out from the crowd. Please send a few details of your story, along with a photograph of yourself, to [email protected] or write to Liz Frost at: 104 New Kings Road, London, SW6 4LP. June's meeting was hosted by self confessed craftivist and upcycler, Grace Moore. Inspired by her mothers passion for patch work, Graces enthusiasm had no bounds for creating a huge variety of decorative items for her home, her family and to sell.
As an easy introduction into the world of patch work, Grace talked us through the principals of crazy patchwork. Just starting with a pentagon shape, we just needed to let go of our inhibitions go and keep sewing strips onto edges whatever which way they go! Everyone went home with a completely unique piece which can now be transformed into whatever we choose! Thank you Grace for a fabulous evening. April's meeting was a fantastic and informative evening learning and tasting a selection of teas from the Kensington Tea company.
Husband and wife team, Alex and Lorraine came to share their knowledge and a small selection of some of their products with us. We first had a talk about the benefits and characteristics of the tea and then onto tasting. There was a varied selection starting with a very sophisticated white tea, a couple of green tea options and then onto a more standard black tea. If you would like to see what The Kensington Tea company has to offer please visit their website at kensingtontea.com A big thanks to Emma for a fantastic evening of creative crafting.
We all pitched in to make our very own Ellingham and Kirby Cane WI themed bunting. Emma took us through template making and the fabric cutting process and everyone had a go at sewing up the triangles and pressing them ready to create the bunting. Member, Sophie then had the job of sewing all the triangles to the tape. Look out for the final result at the next meeting or our next public event. 26th February 2014
Fred, local gardening enthusiast from the Ditchingham Gardening Club, came by to give us all a talk on getting your garden ready for this year. We were advised what to put in when and how to do it. Fred demonstrated a couple of useful tools that will help save your back when digging up those spuds this year and also shared a few useful cooking tips, as he used to be a professional chef. A lively group discussion also gave the members a chance to share some of their hints and tips which they have discovered in their own gardening experiences. So girls, back to the garden and get turning that soil! 22nd January 2013
Our own WI member, Sophie hosted an evening of name badge making for our members to wear at every meeting. With their craft kits at the ready, members were shown a selection of felt or fabric and paper made badges and were asked to come up with something in their own style or theme. Like kids in a sweet shop, the members were treated to a selection of materials to choose from, (donated by members and The Needlecraft Shop in Beccles). Some beautiful badges were made - we look forward to sharing them at the next meeting. 18th December 2013
Mulled wine and mince pies all round for our Christmas festivities! Along with the usual Christmas snacks and goodies we were treated to a Christmas Quiz of true of false, general knowledge and anagrams for a bit of friendly competition! We also had a raffle and a £1 secret santa so everyone went home with a little gift. Merry Christmas Everybody! |
