Historian, Rachel Duffield, came to visit us for our February meeting to talk about Queen Victoria.
Talking through the life of Queen Victoria and the fashions of the time, Rachel started in her royal undies and gradually dressed herself with all the time appropriate clothing and accessories telling us about each and every one of them. She brought some beautiful victorian garments to hand around, demonstrating the quality of hand sewing of the time. As our open evening, inviting local WI's, we had nearly 50 people attend who all enjoyed Rachel's fabulously factual and thoroughly interesting evening.

June's meeting was hosted by self confessed craftivist and upcycler, Grace Moore. Inspired by her mothers passion for patch work, Graces enthusiasm had no bounds for creating a huge variety of decorative items for her home, her family and to sell.
As an easy introduction into the world of patch work, Grace talked us through the principals of crazy patchwork. Just starting with a pentagon shape, we just needed to let go of our inhibitions go and keep sewing strips onto edges whatever which way they go! Everyone went home with a completely unique piece which can now be transformed into whatever we choose! Thank you Grace for a fabulous evening. A big thanks to Emma for a fantastic evening of creative crafting.
We all pitched in to make our very own Ellingham and Kirby Cane WI themed bunting. Emma took us through template making and the fabric cutting process and everyone had a go at sewing up the triangles and pressing them ready to create the bunting. Member, Sophie then had the job of sewing all the triangles to the tape. Look out for the final result at the next meeting or our next public event. 26th February 2014
Fred, local gardening enthusiast from the Ditchingham Gardening Club, came by to give us all a talk on getting your garden ready for this year. We were advised what to put in when and how to do it. Fred demonstrated a couple of useful tools that will help save your back when digging up those spuds this year and also shared a few useful cooking tips, as he used to be a professional chef. A lively group discussion also gave the members a chance to share some of their hints and tips which they have discovered in their own gardening experiences. So girls, back to the garden and get turning that soil! 20th November 2013
Novembers meeting was all about baking breads for Christmas. Our speaker Paul, Bakery owner from Harleston, came in to do a demonstration on how to make Stollen and Panettone. With our mouths watering he showed us how to mix, rest and knead our breads correctly with tips on how to get the best from your baking. Unfortunately no cooking took place, but we were all very grateful for the pre-prepared samples that he kindly made that morning - yum! Paul carries out various workshops at his bakery, you can find out more on his Facebook Page: www.facebook.com/MakeBakeWorkshops 23rd October 2013 Local Author, Mark Mower entertained us with snippets from his new book all about Suffolk murders of times past. With Halloween just around the corner we dim the lights and listen to gory stories of jilted lovers overcome with jealousy and dramatic chases across elveden between poachers and gamekeepers, all resulting in some gruesome deaths. To end (and lighten the mood!) Mark answered questions about his career as a published author and his upcoming projects. An interesting evening of alternative bedtime stories. Sleep well ladies! |
